The iPhone – software numbered 3.0

June 20th, 2009

iPhone 3.0

Changes iPhone required right from the beginning of it’s existence became real. 3.0 software is the one that will stop complaints about lack of features and… well, being too innovative. Bugs have been fixed, cursed copy&paste has been added with over hundreds of other features – Apple is one step closer to perfection.

New software changes our phone from an awesomly fun toy to an even better smartphone. We’ve all been waiting for this!

At start, I need to mention, that I use 3.0 on first generation iPhone and it’s amazing how many stuff can change thanks to software changes and how powerful this device is. Entire system works as great as it has been working previously and even though 3GS is the only phone that provides us smooth work without lags – 2G is not far behind – still usable as hell.

Guess what! Copy & paste

Most recognizable feature of 3.0 is, of course, copy&paste. It has been the biggest argument of complainers, and it’s in the past right now. What I love about Apple, is that they produce things right. We’ve been waiting a long time for this, but it was worth it – this feature has been executed perfectly among the others. No more troubles with posting links to Twitter, mailing stuff like we want it and everything related to it.

Widescreen outside Safari world

What I’ve been against since beginning, were wide keyboards for more apps. I mean, they bring invaluable speed of typing to your fingers and I love it, but they are also a reason for lot of fucks during using iPhone in bed.

No way to browse the Internet comfortably without turning wide mode on. Unfortunately, that’s something we’ll have to live with. Apple didn’t gave us lot control over the accelerometer so we can’t turn it off. Shame. But on the other hand… have I mention passive speed of typing increase? Yay for mails written just as fast as on the computer!

So it depends on the situation – we either love it, or hate it.

Push, or as I’d like to call it, multitasking-wannabe

Regarding push notification, I’d like to point out, that I’m not a typical iPhone user – I own a pre-paid, without any EDGE packets and stuff, so I can only rely on Wi-Fi, since regular EDGE prices are not on my pocket.

Therefore, I can’t afford having them on the whole time. That sucks, that Apple hasn’t been able to design multitasking that works, but let’s hope push will be a fair replacement. Unfortunately I won’t have a lot of chances to check by myself without still Internet connection.

Spotlight

Spotlight! Idea right from the OS X, moved flawlessly to the iPhone. I love it, both positioning it on the right side of my first springboard and speed of it. Searches data quick enough to find a thing we need without waiting ages.

Although I’d love to have support in spotlight for AppStore applications like Things. Would suit in perfectly.

YouTube

Subscriptions in YouTube is also something I’ve been waiting for – watching our favorite channels on the go, without use of their flashy website player? Hell yes! New YouTube.app also lets us view our favorites, video uploaded by us and other stuff like that – it’s finally more powerful than hey, I wanted to see this music video.

Not for 2G

Thethering, MMS… those are not available in 2G, but working well in 3G. I regret the first one – hard are times without the internet sometimes! But MMS? I’ve sent maybe few in life, so I won’t bother about that.

There are more extras available, but only for 3GS – video recording (and its editing, YAY!), compass, great camera… Hardware was the limit.

…And thousands of others

There are thousands of other little improvements that made iPhone more powerful and better, but most of these are to be used by developers – imagine the possibilities of gaming over Bluetooth, for example!

And that is new software, along with my impressions about it. To leave no doubts, I love it. Also, I’d like to say, that iPhone is going to be an iPod among smartphones and in few years, the market will be totally rocked by Apple. I’m sure of that. If they will keep doing as good products as they’re doing right now 3.0, for example, I see nothing wrong in that perspective.

And would also forgot: this post has been written entirely on an iPhone, using widescreen notes. Right now I’m in the ‘love it’ stage.
