Gameloft’s crap for the iPhone
April 24th, 2009
I was totally ok with Gameloft making copies of their games on other platforms to the iPhone. They had to start with something, and that looked like a good opportunity. But now they definitely should stop with this shit and get some people to make their products at least a bit innovative.
We got Symbian OS, we got Windows Mobile, and finally, we got iPhone OS.
I think we all are aware of a fact, that this last one is a bit different – completely margined approaches to user, set of features and quantity of devices. Products for these platforms should be handled completely differently – controls, graphics…
Developers from Gameloft just don’t care. Recently they released Assassin’s Creed for the iPhone – looked huge on the beginning, but as always with their products, it came out as copy of same game for Symbian OS (proved, been testing it with a E61 owner), which is slightly stupid considering their experience with creating games for iPhone.
Thing that gets all the joy of playing are probably worst controls possible. Sorry, but all I feel during playing this thing, is urge to press this button at down on my phone and get back to Springboard. Putting this odd joystick on the screen is just wrong – I know, lack of keyboard makes it hard to copy your games for different OS, but you got to come up with something better than that. I suggest you to take a look what this device actually has to offer. First thing that comes to mind: accelerometer. Now make some thinking and use it.
I’d love to get some new ideas about storylines, but using old ones is good too. If it has worked out on other phones, why not? But accomplishment has to be different – use of accelerometer, touch screen, and perhaps better execution of user interface – Apple’s devices users care more about this stuff.
Conclusion: think more, and make use of iPhone’s opportunities. PLEASE, GAMELOFT. Show me what you can!

Actually, I don’t like the accelerometer used for controlling games. And I liked the ‘joystick’ used in Hero of Sparta for example.
Didn’t seen Assassin’s Creed though.

Seen Rolando or at least Crash Kart? I know these are different types of games, but accelerometer has been used perfectly and I’m sure it’s somehow possible to put into RPG/FPS.

Sure, Love Rolando. And the accelerometer there was a great way of steering, but it doesn’t fit in every type of game.
For example – when you play outside, the sun will reflect from the surface. Right? So, you trying to sit in the direction where the sun won’t disturb. But – when using tilt control, the sun will disturb in some positions. Seriously – sometimes it just pissed me off.
And – sometimes I just like to switch position – lay on bed or something, and the accelerometer doesn’t know my position, so I have to reconfigure it each time (and most apps don’t have an option for that!) or just… sit with the iPhone in position defined by the programmers.
